Flowers and Seeds

Can you describe what a flower looks like? Do they all look different? Flowers come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. However, flowers all have the same job. Flowers make seeds that will grow into new plants.

Many plants grow from seeds. Have you ever seen seeds on a sunflower? Have you seen seeds inside an apple or in a plum, which has one large seed? A little seed can turn into a large plant or a tall tree. That little seed contains everything it needs to grow into a plant. Look at the illustration below. It has food to grow, a root to hold to the soil, and a leaf for the new plant. If you plant a seed in soil and water it, it will use the food inside the seed to grow. As a plant grows the seed shrinks and the plant will start making food on its own.
